If your sign never quite fitted, there is a good place to look before giving up: the Moon.
It is the fastest body in the chart and the one that describes what happens behind closed doors. Plenty of people recognise themselves there instantly, after years of not recognising themselves in their Sun sign.
What the Moon measures
The Sun says where you are headed. The Moon says what you need in order to be all right while you get there.
It is the reaction before the thought: what you do when you are frightened, what you reach for when you are tired, which company rests you and which drains you. It is also emotional memory — the weather of the house you grew up in, and the weather you tend to build in your own.
Which is why it barely shows from outside. The Moon turns up in pyjamas, not in the meeting. Whoever lives with you knows it far better than someone who has worked beside you for ten years.
How to find your Moon sign
It comes from the date, and most of the time that is enough. But the Moon moves 13 to 14 degrees a day — a whole sign every two and a half days — so on nearly four days out of ten it changes sign partway through.
If you were born on one of those days, the hour decides. Without it you are left with two candidates, and it is usually obvious which one you are: two neighbouring signs rarely resemble each other. If you do not have the time, this guide explains what can still be saved.
The sign is half; the house is the other half
The Moon sign says how your emotional side moves. The house it falls in says where: which area of life shows it first when something gets to you.
The same Moon in Cancer does not play out the same way in the fourth house — where the matter is family and having a place of your own — as it does in the tenth, where it ends up staked on work and on what people expect of you. That needs the birth time again.
What the Moon is not
One very common reading is worth taking apart: the Moon is not your diagnosis and not your weakness. Being the most sensitive part does not make it the faulty part.
In practice the Moon is usually the most reliable resource in a chart. It is what you do without thinking, the ground where you do not have to try in order to be good. A fair share of what people call intuition is simply their Moon working fast.
Sun, Moon and rising sign, again
The Moon makes sense next to the other two. An Aquarius Sun with a Taurus Moon wants to change the world and will not move house for anything. A Taurus Sun with an Aquarius Moon does the opposite: lives a settled life and is a thousand miles away on the inside.
All three are covered in this guide, and why the sign alone covers so little in this one.
The short version
- The Moon changes sign every two and a half days: far more personal than the Sun.
- It measures the inside: what you need, how you react, what calms you.
- On nearly four days out of ten the Moon changes sign, and the hour decides.
- The sign says how; the house says where in life it shows.
- It is not your weakness: it is usually what you do best without trying.
