Sun, Moon and rising sign: the three things everyone looks up first

Almost everyone arrives holding a single fact: their sign. That sign is the Sun, and it is the first of three.

The other two are the Moon and the rising sign. Together they explain why two people born under the same sign can look nothing alike.

The Sun: where you point

The Sun takes a year to travel the whole zodiac, so it spends a month in each sign. That is why your Sun sign comes out of the date alone, with no time and no city: on September 3rd the Sun is in Virgo for someone born in Lima and for someone born in Berlin.

What it marks is direction. What you lean toward when you get to choose, what makes you proud, the role you end up taking almost without deciding to. It is not everything you are: it is where you point.

And it is the only thing a newspaper horoscope can know. Hence the poor hit rate: it is talking to one twelfth of the planet at once.

The Moon: how you live it inside

The Moon is the fastest body in the chart. It moves between 13 and 14 degrees a day, so it changes sign every two and a half days. That speed makes it a far finer detail than the Sun: two people born in the same week almost always have the Moon in different signs.

It measures the inside. What you need in order to settle, how you react when something catches you off guard, what comforts you when the day went badly. It is the one that shows up at home, not in the job interview.

The date alone gets it right most of the time, but not always: on close to four days out of ten the Moon changes sign, and then the hour is what decides which side you landed on.

The rising sign: the door you come through

Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the degree of the zodiac that was climbing over the eastern horizon at your exact minute of birth. Since the Earth turns once every 24 hours, all twelve signs pass that point in a day: the rising sign changes roughly every two hours.

Why the three together say more than any one alone

Picture a Capricorn Sun: someone aiming to build something that lasts. Give them a Pisces Moon and they do build, but the ground moves under them easily and they need a lot of silence to recover. Give them an Aries Moon instead and the same ambition gets lived in bursts and arguments.

Now add the rising sign. With Gemini rising, that person arrives talking and comes across as easy company long before anyone notices how serious they are. With Scorpio rising, they arrive quiet and people take months to learn anything about them.

What you need to find all three

Date, time and city of birth. The date gives you the Sun. Date and time give you the Moon with no doubt. Time and city — both — give you the rising sign, because the horizon is not in the same place in Bogota as it is in Madrid.
