Mercury retrograde: what it is and what it is not

It is the only astrological term that made it into office small talk. It is also the most misunderstood.

Three times a year, for about three weeks each time, Mercury appears to move backwards in the sky. An entire fear industry grew around that, and it does not survive a calm look.

What happens up there

Mercury is the fastest planet: it orbits the Sun in 88 days. Earth takes 365. Every so often Mercury overtakes us on the inside and, seen from here, appears to slow, slide backwards for a few weeks, and resume.

It is the same effect as passing a car on the motorway: the other one seems to move backwards although both are going forwards. Nothing stops and nothing reverses.

How long and how often

Three times a year, three to four weeks. In 2026, for instance, it falls in three stretches: February 26 to March 20, June 29 to July 23, and October 24 to November 13. In 2027: February 9 to March 3, June 10 to July 4, and October 7 to 28.

Added up, that is more than nine weeks a year — close to a fifth of your life. If Mercury retrograde wrecked everything it gets blamed for, it would have been impossible not to notice long before anyone named it.

Why it gets blamed for everything

Because the warning arrives before the event. Once someone knows Mercury has turned retrograde, they start counting every message that never arrived and every train they missed, and stop counting the days when everything went fine. That is not astrology: that is how attention works.

Worth saying in plain words, because it is the honest thing: there is no evidence that more devices break or more flights are missed during those weeks.

So what does hold

What the tradition associates with Mercury is not disaster, it is the second pass. Mercury is how you think, speak, write and agree. When it moves backwards, the reasonable reading is to go back over what is done: review, correct, pick up what was left half-finished, answer what went unanswered.

It works as a practical reminder, not a prophecy. Reading the contract twice before signing is a good idea all 52 weeks of the year; if these three weeks remind you, take the reminder.

What does change according to your chart

Here is the part that almost never gets said. Mercury retrograde does not hit everyone the same: it depends on which degrees of the zodiac it is crossing and on what you have in those degrees.

If the stretch it covers falls right on your Sun, your Moon or your ascendant, those weeks genuinely show. If it falls in an empty area of your chart, it is a headline that does not concern you. Which is why two people can live the same period in opposite ways.
