I was born with retrograde planets: what does that mean

Guide · by Astrarya — an AI that reads the sky

Almost everyone was born with at least one. It is among the most alarming things to spot in a chart for the first time, and among the least deserving of alarm.

What retrograde motion is

No planet moves backwards. What happens is a matter of perspective: the Earth and the other planet travel at different speeds, and when one overtakes the other — like two cars on a motorway — the one behind appears to slide backwards for a while against the background of stars.

It is a purely optical effect and perfectly calculable. We know centuries in advance when it will happen, and there is nothing irregular about it.

How long each planet spends retrograde

Here is the fact that takes the fright out of it. The slow planets are retrograde nearly half the year, every year:

With those numbers, being born with Pluto retrograde happens to about half of humanity. It can hardly mean anything exceptional about you.

What gets read and what does not

The practical rule is simple: the faster the planet, the more personal its retrograde.

Mercury, Venus and Mars retrograde do say something about you, because they are relatively rare. Jupiter and Saturn say less. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto retrograde are shared by half a generation, so they do not describe a person: they only carry weight when they closely touch something personal, like the Sun, the Moon or the ascendant.

How a natal retrograde tends to be lived

What it usually describes is an inward, off-beat way of working, not a fault.

Mercury retrograde does not mean you think badly: it tends to describe someone who processes before speaking and truly understands on the second pass. It often comes with a childhood spent struggling to keep up with the class and an adulthood explaining things better than anyone.

Venus retrograde tends to arrive late at its own taste: it borrows other people's first and only later discovers what it actually likes. Mars retrograde does not fight head-on; it holds and decides afterwards, and finds direct anger harder than sustained anger.

What it does not mean

It is not unpaid karma or a badly resolved past life. It is not bad luck. And it does not need fixing: nothing is broken.

In a serious reading, a retrograde planet is a shading of how that planet works in you, weighed alongside its sign, its house and its aspects, like everything else. The full method is in how to read your chart step by step.
