One planet in your chart carries more weight than the other nine, and it is hardly ever the one people expect.
It is not the Sun and not the Moon. It is the planet that rules your ascendant, and it works as the thread the rest hangs from.
How to find it
Every sign has a planet that rules it. Look at which sign your ascendant falls in, find that sign's planet, and that is your ruler. Then look at where that planet sits in your chart: in which sign and, above all, in which house.
- Aries and Scorpio: Mars
- Taurus and Libra: Venus
- Gemini and Virgo: Mercury
- Cancer: the Moon
- Leo: the Sun
- Sagittarius and Pisces: Jupiter
- Capricorn and Aquarius: Saturn
That is the traditional list, the one used for two thousand years. After the modern discoveries, three new rulers were added: Pluto for Scorpio, Uranus for Aquarius and Neptune for Pisces. None of them replaces the older one: in practice both are read, and the traditional ruler is still the one that organises.
Why it matters so much
The ascendant is the door you go out into the world through. Its ruler is who carries you: the planet that says which resource you meet your life with.
If your ruler is Mars, you advance by pushing. If it is Venus, you advance by relating. If it is Saturn, you advance by endurance and work, usually slower at the start and steadier later.
And the house that planet falls in points to the ground your life is played on. Ruler in the ninth house and the story runs through travel, study or moving far away. Ruler in the sixth and it runs through daily work and the body.
The detail that changes a reading
When the ruler sits in a house other than the one it governs, a bridge forms between two matters, and that bridge often describes someone's life better than any isolated fact.
An example: Libra rising, ruler Venus, Venus in the tenth house. That person goes out into the world through dealing with people, and that dealing gets staked on career and public life. Another: Cancer rising, ruler the Moon, Moon in the seventh. There, life is decided inside one-to-one bonds.
A frequent mistake
Confusing the chart ruler with the ruler of your Sun sign. If you are a Leo, the Sun rules your sign, but not your chart, unless you also happen to have Leo rising.
And since the ruler depends on the ascendant, it depends on the exact birth time. No time, no ascendant, no ruler: it is one of the first things lost.
